Welcome to First Grade!
This year we will learn many things.
Religion: This year, we recognize that God is creator of all things and learn that the Bible is Jesus' way of teaching us about God and His love for us. We learn to live as Jesus did.
Language Arts: We will learn to read using phonics. Not only will we learn the phonetic sounds, we will also learn the rules of phonics. We will learn to write complete sentences and create paragraphs.
Math: We will learn to solve addition and subtraction problems with one- and two-digit numbers without regrouping. We will begin to understand the algebra concept of finding the unknown. In geometry, students will be able to identify two-dimensional objects (squares, circles, rectangles and triangles), as well as three-dimensional objects (cubes, spheres, cones and cylinders).
Science: We will learn the differences between living and nonliving things. We will begin to understand our solar system and the planets. We will learn about our five senses, our skeleton and muscles.
Social studies: We will learn the differences of town and country, city and neighborhood. We will learn about the symbols and traditions of the United States. We will learn about and celebrate national and cultural holidays and identify national heroes from our country's history.
I have a great year planned and I look forward to teaching your child.
