Dear Parents,

Welcome to Grade Six!

This is an important transitional year between elementary school and junior high, and we stay very busy.

Religion: We travel through the Old Testament and learn the history of the Israelites and the Patriarchs of Judaism. We connect that to the beginning of Catholicism and talk often about our close relation to other faiths. This connects frequently to our social studies curriculum which takes us on a journey through Ancient Civilizations, including Egypt, Mesopotamia, India, China, Greece and Rome. These lessons are enriched by a field trip to the Museum of Man in Balboa Park.

Math: We prepare for pre-algebra by continuing to work with fractions and decimals and to solve equations. Also, we have a statistics unit and a geometry unit. Our most anticipated field trip, Astrocamp, a weeklong experience, is a great complement to our science curriculum.

Earth and Physical Science: Volcanoes, formation of landforms, weather and earthquakes are our focus in sixth grade.

Language Arts: We also work a great deal with our writing, beginning with perfecting a descriptive paragraph. We write book reviews, point-of-view pieces, poetry and finally culminate with a research paper and project that examines one of our fascinating civilizations in depth. We continue to work on our grammar and vocabulary and have weekly spelling and vocabulary quizzes.

Along the way, we manage to have a lot of fun! I look forward to teaching your child.

Mrs. Kristina Mosel
